L-arginine is converted into Nitric oxide which increases blood flow and enlarges blood vessels.  This helps to fill your muscles with blood when you are using them intensely, which is necessary to carry a larger amount of nutrients to the muscles when you exercise.  This process occurs whenever you exercise, and new capillaries will form in the muscle to help this process.  Intense exercise will deplete the supplies of NO that your body produces, which is why many athletes and bodybuilders look to replenish it with supplements.
